Slab model implementation of two‐dimensional ELF scattering by a cylindrically symmetric but radially varying ionospheric disturbance is described. The method allows for estimating disturbance effects on the laterally dependent part of the transverse magnetic field components. The ground‐based transmitter and receiver may be located beneath the disturbance or outside its projection on the ground. Although partial sum convergence difficulties restrict its generality, the model can be used for a variety of case studies associated with both natural and man‐made ionospheric disturbances. As an example, calculations are presented for propagation in the presence of disturbed polar cap boundary models.
