The theory of scattering of electromagnetic waves by a small hole in a conducting screen is reviewed in order to identify the key elements of the problem. Then attention is turned to holes in the shield of a coaxial cable and to leaky feeders. The engineering model currently used is described. Integral equations for the electric field in the apertures are established. The cases of a single hole and of a periodic distribution of holes are examined, and suggestions are made for the numerical solution of the problem.
