A new systematic approach is developed for the numerical treatment of electromagnetic scattering problems. It employs a filtering and sampling procedure that is applied, alternately, to the spectral domain and the spatial‐domain electromagnetic field representations. The resulting linear algebraic problem is solved by minimizing, iteratively, the root‐mean‐square value of the residual. Numerical results are obtained for the scattering by inhomogeneous, penetrable objects in one, two and three dimensions.
