Observations of nonlinearly produced sidebands in the ionospherically reflected wave, using two powerful incident HF waves at closely spaced frequencies, are described. The sidebands are separated by multiples of the difference frequency of the incident waves. A theory for the production of the sidebands is proposed in terms of a modulation of the phase of the reflected wave at the difference frequency. The results of this theory are in reasonable agreement with the observations.
