Experiments have been conducted using the 40‐MHz Sunset radar in Colorado and the 50 MHz Poker Flat, Alaska, MST radar to reexamine the range resolution (Δ r ) dependence of backscattered power for Fresnel scatter. Sunset radar observations now show a (Δ r ) 1 dependence for backscattered power provided Δ r > 1 km. For Δ r < 1 km, results vary from day to day but are closer to (Δ r ) 1 than (Δ r ) 2 . In an independent experiment the Δ r dependence of backscattered power observed by the Poker Flat MST radar was also found to be close to (Δ r ) 1 .
