Recently, the author proposed a unified method to factorize a class of matrices involved in diffraction problems leading to coupled Wiener‐Hopf equations. In this paper, as an example of application, a new canonical problem has been considered and solved by this method. This problem considers the diffraction of a plane wave incident upon a pair of parallel half planes where the field satisfies arbitrary impedance conditions with opposite impedances on the two faces of each half plane. In addition, the factorization procedure is extended to all matrices commuting with polynomial matrices.
