Modern digital ionosondes have the capability to measure amplitude and phase of each echo with high precision. Recording these quantities at four antennas located at the corners of a square permits the numerical separation of overlapping ordinary and extraordinary echoes. The formulation of the nonlinear equation system to do this is given together with an iteration algorithm for its solution. The practical application of this process is demonstrated.
