On the basis of the hypergeometric equation, a class of refractive index profiles has been generated that accommodates a local resonance and that is otherwise a monotonic transition from one limiting homogeneous region to another. The reflectivity and transmittivity then follow from the known circuit relations for solutions of the hypergeometric equation. The expressions found are compared with those obtained by Budden, based on a confluent hypergeometric equation.
