Recent ionospheric heating experiments at Arecibo demonstrate that the rapid growth of electrostatic plasma waves exhibits a remarkable dependence on HF pulse length and CW preconditioning. The effects are traceable to the generation of short‐scale distortions in the density profile near the plasma resonance.
