Dispersion characteristics of a fibre link that consist of several lengths of fibres jointed together cannot be related deterministically to the (nominally) specified dispersion values of the individual sections because of the random effects introduced at the fibre joints, and statistical differences between the specified and actual dispersion values of the sections. In this paper, the fibre link dispersion is modelled as a statistical quantity, and preliminary results that relate the link dispersion to the first and second order moments of the rms dispersion of each section are obtained.
