We examine the filter characteristics of modulated periodic structures through the use of vector coupled‐mode equations and the corresponding matrix Riccati equation. Simple expressions are found for several quantities of interest and the effect of loss, modulation index, and modulation wave number are examined. We find excellent agreement between this approximate theory and the exact electromagnetic formulation if the structure contains many cycles of each pertinent periodicity and if the perturbation is small.
