This paper describes a single‐component method of correcting for underlying and valley ionization in N (h) analysis of ionograms. The h ′ min ( ƒ L ) point is suggested for use in calculating the F layer real heights when only one magnetoionic component is available in an ionogram. Formulae are presented which relate the real height at the frequency ƒ L to the corresponding virtual height via the peak parameters of the E layer.
