An iterative inversion algorithm is given which facilitates the reconstruction of a plane‐stratified profile from scattering data in the presence of a background slab. The inversion procedure, formulated within the bounds of the so‐called, ‘distorted wave Born’ model, is given for both an incident plane wave and a point source excitation. While an exact inversion is achieved for an incident plane wave, the point source configuration is inverted asymptotically, thus excluding wave ‘trapping’ effects.
