The electromagnetic field in the air directly above a horizontal dipole embedded in the earth is evaluated from the exact integrals. Also discussed are Baños' approximate formulas and improvements on these. Graphs are shown when the earth's surface is sea water, lake water, and dry earth. In all cases the Poynting vector points upward into the air along the vertical axis through the dipole.
