Approximate expressions for the ac quasi‐static fields produced by a horizontal electric dipole (HED) antenna located within a conducting slab have been derived by employing finitely conducting earth image theory techniques. Asymptotic results have also been obtained by applying the quasi‐near approximation to the basic Sommerfeld integrals. The resulting approximations agree with previously derived numerical integration results. The resulting expressions are particularly applicable to short‐range electromagnetic propagation in a shallow sea.
