A diagnostic method is described in which the impulse response of a cold, lossy, magnetoplasma half space is used to infer the characteristic parameters of the plasma, namely, angular plasma frequency, electron collision frequency, and electron gyrofrequency. The method uses observations of measurable quantities from the early‐time portion of the impulse response. Using these quantities, plasma parameters can be obtained directly from a contour map. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the diagnostic technique.
