The double hetero stripe‐geometry laser is analyzed using a technique which has recently been referred to as the effective dielectric constant (EDC) method. Unlike previously reported techniques, the EDC method allows both vertical and horizontal directions in the cross section of the laser to be taken into account in analyzing the field confinement mechanism. Computed data on field concentrations and cutoff behaviors of the fundamental mode are presented for both single and coupled structures.
