A theoretical model is developed to describe the CW operation of a Brillouin optical‐fiber ring oscillator. Expressions describing both the oscillation threshold and the Brillouin output power are derived as a function of the design parameters and the conditions to maximize the output power are then determined. For the ring resonator configuration considered it is shown that the maximum external conversion efficiency that can be achieved is 25%. Also, a comparison of the results of the theoretical model with experimental data indicates that the operation of the device is affected by the fiber birefringence.
