The articles in this issue were selected from 40 papers presented at a symposium in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 13 through 15, 1970. The symposium was held at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and was sponsored by URSI and the NRAO. The members of the organizing committee were: Prof. M. H. Cohen, California Institute of Technology; Dr. J. W. Findlay, National Radio Astronomy Observatory; Dr. D. L. Jauncey, Center for Radiophysics and Space Research, Cornell University; Dr. K. I. Kellermann, National Radio Astronomy Observatory; Dr. J. L. Locke, National Research Council, Ottawa, Canada; Prof. O. E. H. Rydbeck, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden; and Dr. V. V. Vitkevich, Lebedev Physical Institute, Moscow, USSR. The purpose of the symposium was the exchange of information between radio astronomers and workers in disciplines such as geodesy and relativity, in which the very long baseline interferometry technique can be valuable.
