Distortion of an electromagnetic pulse undergoing total internal reflection in inhomogeneous isotropic plasmas with special reference to the lower ionosphere has been investigated. The initial transient response and buildup of the reflected signal for different angles of incidence has been numerically investigated. It is seen that the signal builds up more rapidly for larger angles of incidence, and the dispersion is maximum for normal incidence of the pulse. This observation is in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations of Schmitt (1965) for uniform plasmas.
