This review summarizes the last decade of upper atmospheric and magnetospheric studies in Antarctica using ground‐based optical techniques. These techniques have included simple all‐sky cameras, spectral imaging, photometry, and interferometry. Research areas investigated include dayside aurora, auroral conjugacy, thermospheric dynamics, and wave‐particle interactions. Various national programs have tended to specialize in particular areas, and as yet there has been little emphasis on international cooperation to study large‐scale phenomena. Nevertheless, the contribution from Antarctic optical studies over the past decade has been diverse and significant.
