This report represents a continuing evolution in the editorial format. Eight years ago the Marine Chemistry report consisted of a single article. Four years ago the Marine Organic section was separated from the rest. In this report the subject has been divided into nine articles. As a consequence we find some duplication, some inconsistencies and some gaps, but these are balanced by a more diverse perspective and perhaps broader coverage. Readers should note that the article by Thomas Church reviews only the first three years of the quadriennium due to the demands of his field program and other practical constraints. In the article on Paleoceanography, Constance Sancetta has properly confined the review to articles related to oceanic processes, and thus omitted the very active discussion related to the global Cretaceous‐Tertiary boundary.
