There has been a great deal of interest in the magnetotail during the past quadrennial period. This has been in part due to the passage of ISEE 3 through the distant magnetotail. The investigation of the region from 60 to 220 RE from the earth has contributed much to our understanding of tail structure and dynamical response to geomagnetic activity. As always the question of substorms and the nature of energy transfer is a focus for many publications.
