Aeronomy focuses on the thermosphere, mesosphere, and stratosphere of Earth as well as on the atmospheres of other planets. The fundamental scientific disciplines from which aeronomy draws are atomic and molecular physics, photochemistry, radiative transfer, electromagnetic theory, and plasma physics. This introduction provides a brief overview of aeronomic research over the past four years as background for the more detailed reviews that follow.
