Substantial progress has been made in equatorial ocean dynamics during the period 1983–1986 largely as a result of several multiinstitution programs. These programs have been built around strong observational components and provide greatly improved descriptions of equatorial phenomena. They have stimulated numerical and analytical modelling efforts, which have generated results for comparison with observations. In this report we restrict discussion to dynamical aspects of equatorial ocean circulation, both steady and time‐dependent.
