The year 1982 marks the 25‐year anniversary of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) as well as the birth of the World Data Center (WDC) system. The WDC's were created to provide access to the data generated by the IGY global program. Two “universal” WDC's with activities in all covered fields were created—WDC‐A in the United States and WDC‐B in the USSR. Other WDC's for individual disciplines were established in Europe and Japan as WDC‐C's where special centers of expertise existed.
