Like most of the topics covered in this review series, metallogenesis (the genesis of non‐fuel mineral deposits) constitutes a meeting ground for many internationally active disciplines, in this instance, ranging from physical chemistry and metallurgy, through descriptive and interpretive studies of ore deposits, to regional and global syntheses. The reviewer has attempted, with less than complete success, to avoid citations to the “gray” literature (meetings abstracts, reports of contractors, conference reports, annual reports of research institutions, theses, and U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) open‐file reports), concentrating as much as possible on peer‐reviewed journals and books. State geological reports have not received enough attention. Coverage is spotty for late 1982, and only half the 500+ references checked could be noted in the space alloted.
