Research in geophysics has advanced so that calibrated experiments can be done to static pressures as high as 1.7 Mbar at 4000 K. Part of this review references new experimental techniques to generate ultrahigh pressures, to calibrate the pressures, and to conduct in situ physical measurements. The other part lists geophysically relevant research results. Most of the references are related to research done in the United States during the past four years.
