Many major advances in geodesy have been precipitated by the development of new or improved techniques for obtaining geophysical data. Geometrical geodesy, the study of the shape of the earth, has benefited from measurements of absolute and relative positions. Physical geodesy, the study of the gravity field, has benefited from measurements of the components of the absolute and relative gravity vectors. The significance of new techniques has been clearly recognized.
