There has been a marked change in the character of magnetospheric modeling during the past quadrennium. In earlier studies, the emphasis was on describing the average magnetospheric properties. These descriptive models were empirical or semiempirical and provided a static picture of the magnetospheric configuration. This approach has proved quite useful.
