In the last four years considerable interest has been evidenced in the physics and chemistry of the earth's middle atmosphere in general and in middle atmosphere electrodynamics in particular. In this review we discuss a variety of new techniques which have been developed to study this region and several exciting and controversial results accruing from this effort.
