The scientific results of the U.S. International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) ground‐based program available to the author up to February 1982 are summarized. Included are results derived from (1) magnetometers of the IMS meridian chains, (2) incoherent scatter radars, (3) a balloon campaign, and (4) optical spectroscopic observations. A large body of data obtained during the IMS remains to be analyzed and published.
