Most early civilizations were cradled in river valleys because rivers are key sources of water. Since sediment is an integral part of the flow in a large majority of rivers, a great deal of research has been conducted on sedimentation. The purpose of this paper is to review major problems and advances in sedimentation from 1975 through 1978. Although there have been many significant foreign papers published, this review is mainly restricted to U.S. contributions.
