It is the purpose of this review article to desscribe the progress that has been made over the past four years in a new field of space physics. The wealth of new observations by Pioneers 10 and 11, and Mariner‐10—as well as more sensitive instruments aboard Earth orbiters—has expanded the field dramatically. [In this article, the wealth of experimental and theoretical results obtained over the past 4 years in and near the Earth's solar wind cavity will be examined only cursorily.] This article will concentrate on propagation in the interplanetary medium, and acceleration and escape mechanisms in the regions near the planets other than Earth.
