The interaction between ocean and atmosphere has in recent years received increasing attention because of its importance to the understanding and prediction of climatic changes. Consequently, one is faced with an overabundance of scientific work in this area rather than a lack, and the scope of this review will therefore have to be carefully limited. The focus will be on true interactions, namely, on processes which are significant simultaneously to both the ocean and the atmosphere and will emphasize the large‐scale features because of their importance to climate. Consequently, work on the generation of ocean surface waves or of strictly meteorological interest and work on instrumentation will not be discussed here. Also omitted will be work on the geological time scale and on the exchanges of geochemical properties, in particular pollutants.
