Marine geodesy is concerned primarily with the determination of geodetic positions, control at sea, and the ocean geoid. The determination of these parameters is not an end in itself but a means to solving various ocean‐related problems, e.g., surveying and mapping, environment, resources development, mean sea level, systems calibration, and evaluation and ocean physics applications. This report summarizes the marine geodetic activities in the United States since the 1971 International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics meeting. These activities are discussed under the following topics: (1) geodetic positions and control and (2) ocean geoid determination.
