Significant advances in understanding the major rock‐forming silicates in the past 4 years have been achieved through theoretical and experimental studies of the thermodynamics of crystalline solutions, chemical bonding by molecular orbital calculations, and spectroscopic measurements and fine structure in minerals through high‐resolution and high‐voltage electron microscopy. Techniques of X ray diffraction and optical and Mössbauer spectroscopy of minerals under high pressure and temperature have opened up the possibility of studying crystal and electronic structures of minerals under mantle conditions. Significant advances have also been made in understanding the structures of nonsilicate minerals, particularly sulfides, borates, sulfates, and phosphates. Mineral descriptions, new or old, have been excluded from this review owing to space limitation.
