We point out that the physical implications of the plasma and magnetic field gradients in the Earth's magnetosphere include both resonance absorption of energy and nonlinear effects such as wave steepening and breaking. We conclude, by consideration of the relative timescales for the two processes, that hydromagnetic resonance absorption effects are more important in the Earth's magnetospheric plasma environment.
