A recurrent and almost stationary region of banded clouds and precipitation has been identified over the Gulf Stream off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, in winter. This rainband is attributed to the large fluxes of heat and moisture from the warm waters of the Gulf Stream to the colder, overlying air. It is speculated that the Gulf Stream rainband could play a role in cyclogenesis, which is common off the Carolina Coast.
