Recently reported plasma and magnetic field measurements of the distant geomagnetic tail magnetopause and boundary layer (i.e. mantle) are compared with numerical simulation results for an "open" boundary. Most aspects of the observations are consistent with the simulation results provided that the normal magnetic field component at the magnetopause is generally small.
