Experimental results, obtained during the PORCUPINE experiment and dealing with the interaction of an artificial ion conic with the background auroral plasma, are presented. In addition, these results are compared to the measurements performed by the S3‐3 satellite when natural ion conies are present. This comparison shows that the physical processes associated with the neutralization of conical ion distributions and with their interaction with the background plasma induce the same kind of electrostatic shocks and turbulence as those recorded by S3‐3.
