Claimed periodicities in northeastern Chinese rainfall are examined by comparing records spanning the period 1470–1979 from several sites near Beijing. Although a number of periodicities occur, they are generally unstable in both space and time. This suggests that they have little or no physical significance and that their predictive value is negligible.
