A common source is suggested for the acetonitrile (CH 3 CN) and methanol (CH 3 OH) observed in the stratospheric ions [CH 3 CN·H + ·(H 2 O) n ] and [CH 3 OH·H + ·(H 2 O) n )]. Our chemical scheme originates with the three‐body association of HCN and CH 2 O. Rate constants needed to explain the observations are estimated. An astrophysical application is briefly noted.
