A system is described whereby ambient free radicals (predominantly HO 2 and RO 2 ) are detected by their ability to initiate a chain reaction oxidizing NO and CO. The NO 2 thus produced by this "chemical amplifier" is modulated by substitution of N 2 for CO and detected by a liquid phase luminescence with luminol. A prototype system and results of ambient air sampling are presented.
