Analysis of long path atmospheric absorption spectra and of laboratory absorption spectra in the 1600 cm −1 region has resulted in the identification of atmospheric quadrupole lines of O 2 in its fundmental vibrational band within the electronic ground state. This led to the identification of similar atmospheric quadrupole lines of N 2 in the 2400 cm −1 region.
