A method for determining the visible absorption coefficient of stratospheric aerosols is presented. The first eight samples had a median value of 4 × 10 −9 m −1 , with an uncertainty of about ± 5 × 10 −9 m −1 . The resulting estimated single‐scattering albedo was in the range 0.96‐1.0.
