Results from a numerical simulation of a double layer show some important features of electron fluxes during auroral events; strong heating of the thermal and precipitating electrons is seen. Extremely low frequency fluctuations observed during inverted‐V events are also seen in the simulation. Fluctuations are caused by a relaxation type of oscillation involving the plasma and the instabilities through the formation of cavitons.
