Ions of mass 48 amu observed in the altitude range 94 km to 107 km during the 1976 Perseid meteor shower are interpreted as SO + ions. It is suggested that the sulfur released in the E‐region by ablating meteoroids is rapidly converted to SO, this species being the principal form of sulfur above about 90 km, with [SO] ≫ [SO + ] > [S] ≫ [S + ].
