The data from a new doppler auroral radar system operating in the south of New Zealand reveal a number of dramatic features in the temporal and spatial distribution of the radio aurora. Data presentation is such that quantitative measurements can be made while still allowing the recognition of broad‐scale dynamic features in both echo amplitude and doppler shift.
