While photochemical reactions convert SO 2 to H 2 SO 4 and remove O 2 from the Venus stratosphere, thermochemical reactions near the surface probably make the SO 2 , regenerate CO 2 from photolytic CO, and produce free sulfur. Venera data suggest a light drizzle of liquid sulfur above 18 km, and several per cent of sulfur vapor below.
